GeoSearch
Thangs allows you to search indexed models in our constantly growing database. In addition to searching using text, you can also use our GeoSearch function to search using a 3D model.
What is GeoSearch?
GeoSearch is a way to search in 3D rather than the traditional text search you’re used to. Consider it a geometric search engine that does not require text or metadata; only the 3D models Thangs indexes geometrically.
Our geometric model index has doubled over the last few months and our engineers have improved the speed in which a GeoSearch query finds matches for you.
Why would you use GeoSearch?
GeoSearch has a variety of use cases for many different users.
For example, GeoSearch can help you auto-complete a design. If you have a model of a piston that belongs in an engine, you can search using that model and find several engines in which it may belong.
For 3D printers, if you previously downloaded a model and are unsure who created it but want to see if the designer has other cool models to print — you can easily use GeoSearch to find who designed it. Read below for the exact steps.
How do you use GeoSearch?
An easy way to test out GeoSearch on your own is to first find an assembly, download part of it, and then search for that part using GeoSearch.
In this example we’ll use the piston downloaded from this assembly. Next, click the upload icon in our search bar to use GeoSearch. Now you can drag and drop the piston model on the screen to have Thangs search for it. GeoSearch will find the single cylinder engine it belongs to, and other engines with a similar piston.
